Vinyl Verdicts: Song Reviews

Songs That Sound Like Fall: Hard Skip or Music to Our Ears?

Sweater weather is here, and Vinyl Verdicts is Falling into Autumn. This week Chris and Rachel each built a playlist of songs that remind them of fall or just sound like it.

A few say it right in the title, like “Autumn Sweater,” “Harvest Moon,” and “Apple Cider.” Most never mention the season at all, but feel like gray skies, flannel, and the first cold morning of October.

The full playlist leans into goth, post-punk, shoegaze, and 90s alternative, with picks from The Cure, Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, New Order, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Deftones, Alice in Chains, Yo La Tengo, Neil Young, Amy Winehouse, and more.

There’s also a farewell to summer along the way, because you can’t fall into autumn without letting go of something first.

As always, every track we play gets a verdict on the 1 to 5 records scale, from a hard skip to music to our ears.

What’s your go-to fall song? Tell us in the comments.
